Climate Change, The Lobster Industry and Right Whales
Vinalhaven Land Trust works on behalf of the land, the people, the culture and the economy of our island home. We stand with our neighbors, friends, and family in the lobster fishing community as we face the destabilizing impacts of climate change together. The marine ecosystem is profoundly affected by climate change, and we have a very small window of time to act on behalf of both the lobster industry and the Right Whales.
Historically, the lobster industry has self-regulated, implementing rule changes to protect the sustainability of the species. Now they are facing new federal regulations which would dramatically impact the industry, and by extension, Vinalhaven and every other fishing community along the coast. The stakes could not be higher, so it is imperative to understand the science behind proposed rule changes.
We believe that changes in policy should be based on evidence and science, and we are inspired by Island Institute, Gulf of Maine Research Institute and Maine Lobstermen’s Association’s efforts to share the latest science and community data with Maine’s island and coastal communities.
In an effort to promote community conversations, we will now feature a new tab on our website, under “resources” which points to links with articles and information about the current and pending challenges and changes to the lobstering industry. Links from differing perspectives will be included.
We invite you to join us in thoughtful, research-based consideration of the issues that so directly impact Vinalhaven's lobster fishing families, and all who are economically connected to them.
