Sarah Russell
She has been coming to the island since the early 90s when her parents bought property on Calderwood Neck. She solidified her island commitment when she married a multi-generational summer resident, turned year-rounder. The two have since spent every summer on the island, raising their four kids amongst the granite and the pines. Sarah is the co-owner of The Sustainable Athlete, a strength and endurance coaching business based in Cumberland, Maine. When not teaching classes, running clinics or coaching athletes, she focuses on community organizing. Sarah holds a BA from Bowdoin and an MBA from Boston University. Sarah is lucky enough to spend half the summer next to Starboard Rock and the other half next to Tip Toe, two magnificent Land Trust properties. She can often be seen running on the trails of one or the other. Sarah is excited to join the Board of VLT and continue the important work of land accessibility, conservation and stewardship.

Mitchell Stokes
Mitch first came to Vinalhaven as a young child in 1960 after his uncle, Ed Hoyt, acquired a parcel of land on Calderwood Neck that included much of the shore of the Priviledge, as well as what now constitutes the Starboard Rock Sanctuary. Since then, Mitch has never missed a summer, and he has welcomed opportunities to come to the island at other times of year as well. His wife Cristina and children Barbara and Dannshare his love for the place. He is an avid birder and enjoys hiking, canoeing and camping. He especially loves combining these last two activities: over the years he’s paddled northern Maine’s Allagash River fifteen times.
After an initial foray into mathematics, Mitch entered medical school in his mid 30’s and he had a twenty-five-year career as a psychiatrist for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, providing care to hospitalized patients most of whom were court-involved. He is now largely retired, and he is greatly enjoying the opportunity this gives him to spend more time on the island.
Mitch knows well that he and his family have benefited enormously from the efforts of many—including his uncle—to preserve the island’s natural character. He is delighted to be joining the VLT board and looks forward to finding ways that he can contribute to its mission of stewardship and conservation.

Art Carpenter
Art Carpenter has been a summer visitor to Vinalhaven since 1984 when he and his wife Alex first rented “The Birches” from Tudor & Winona Peterson. It rained every day that first week and Art & Alex loved the island so much they’ve come back (almost) every year since. After many rentals arranged through Captain Frank Thompson, Art & Alex purchased a 19th century fixer-upper cottage on Arey Cove that they share with their adult children Walker and Isabelle.
Art grew up in Williamstown, Mass. Alex is from Buffalo, NY and is a current member of the board of Partners in Island Education. Art & Alex live in Austin Texas where Art is a real estate investor playing a small part in the crazy boomtown that is Austin. Joshua Eckels
Joshua Eckels is a year-round resident and cabinet maker on the island. A serially self-employed Jack-of-all-trades with a background in fine art. He has lived in Maine since the early 1990s and the same thing that originally drew him to Maine from West Virginia lured him further east to Vinalhaven in 2011. The romance of maritime New England and the power of the connection between land and sea. Drawn here from Portland by his love of that costal landscape and the islands unending supply of natural inspiration. Struck from day one by the obvious pride held for this place left him wanting to be part of why many call these islands ours and more importantly, ours to share. One of his very first introductions to the geography of the island was the little VLT information kiosk at Skoog Park. The wealth of conservation and public access made a lasting impression. That day surely led Joshua to the pursuit of becoming more involved in the land trust and helping to continue the tradition of protecting as much of this treasure and tradition as possible.
