Environmental Education on Vinalhaven

Vinalhaven Land Trust is a proud sponsor of Vinalhaven School environmental education programs. Featured below are some of those that took place in fall 2022:

Throughout the fall, middle school students participated in weekly School Garden classes, tending the garden, eating their produce, and making observations of their garden plants and the other life in the soil and the garden space.

The 8th graders successfully completed their annual trip to Baxter State Park. They hiked Mt Katahdin, went canoeing and fishing in surrounding lakes, and had many other outdoor adventures.

K and 1st grade students hiked story trail with their teachers, and met Tanglewood educators to learn about the world around them on our other Granite Island trails. 5th and 6th graders also visited Tanglewood for an overnight trip.

We collaborated with PIE to lead several outdoor after-school adventures this fall - including
cider pressing!

Together with PIE, we also took students to explore low tide at Lanes.

Another collaboration with PIE - an after-school hike and scavenger hunt at Granite Island.

In November, 2nd grade walked to Armbrust Hill, learning from VLT steward Kerry Hardy about winter animal signs and adaptations.

Chewonki educators visited our school in December with live animals (including stick bugs, a screech owl, a tarantula named Tula and more!), and taught all of the elementary students about animal adaptations.

High school students kicked off the winter by learning about Vinalhaven geology from George Kendrick and joining North Haven students to come up with climate resilience strategies.
